So you wanna make some videos huh? Maybe put them on YouTube? Perhaps you would like to make a Minecraft let’s play, a programming tutorial, or a vlog. To edit videos you will need some video editing software. You might have heard that you need to get Adobe’s suit of software: Premier Pro for editing, and After Effects for effects. While these are certainly some nice programs, a Creative Cloud subscription can cost you $52.99 a month. The question is: do you really need the shell out 50 bucks every month just to make some videos. The answer, thankfully, is heck no (unless you are doing some super advanced thing that I haven’t heard of)! I have made all of the videos in my YouTube channel without spending a single cent.
For Video Editing
There are many free video editors. I personally find that kdenlive suits all of my video editing needs. Another program that I have heard good things about is DaVinci Resolve. It has both a paid and free version. The free version should be able to handle any basic editing, but for advanced features you may need to buy the paid version (a one time purchase of $295).
For Special Effects
Blender. Full stop. There is nothing I have seen that is quit like Blender. It is a free 3d animation program that can be used for adding effects into videos. This is a very advanced program and is not for the faint of heart. It is so good that it manages to compete with industry leading software such as Audodesk’s Maya (which can cost up to $215 per month). Blender was even used to make the Netflix original Next Gen (which I haven’t seen but the animation looks good).
Conclusion
Unless video editing is your entire career, there is no reason to pay tons of money to edit videos.
